Initial situation and foundation impulse
The establishment of the Fraunhofer Project Group IWKS and its positioning in the Rhine/Main region was decisively influenced by companies that had already cooperated with the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC in Würzburg, the "parent institute" of the Project Group IWKS. With its initiative to establish a Fraunhofer Institute in the industrial area Aschaffenburg/Hanau, an institution was to be created which develops research and technology know-how in the field of recycling and substitution in close exchange with the companies.
This initiative was taken up by the federal states of Bavaria and Hesse and supported with considerable financial resources for the establishment of the Project Group IWKS. The aim is to structurally strengthen the region by institutionalising cutting-edge research and transferring the results into innovative products. As the region has universities and colleges with a scientific, materials science and engineering orientation, the Project Group IWKS is intended to develop a centre of competence network for resource strategy, resource cycles and substitution, thereby also achieving a structural strengthening of the research landscape.
