The German Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Construction has awarded Fraunhofer IWKS buildings according to the Sustainable Building Rating System (BNB). The site in Alzenau received a gold certificate and the one in Hanau a silver certificate for sustainable building projects.

The new building of Fraunhofer IWKS at the Alzenau site was supported by the Operational Program "Investments in Growth and Employment" Bavaria with funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2014-2020 in the amount of € 16.5 million.

The Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology (StMWi) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) each provided additional funding of €8.25 million for the new building in Alzenau and its initial equipment.

The new building of the Fraunhofer IWKS at the Hanau location and its initial equipment was supported by the Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and the Arts (HMWK) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the amount of € 14.75 million each.
