FUNMAG

HA Hessen agency project: "Functional magnet recycling for sustainable e-mobility - FUNMAG"

In this project, the Fraunhofer IWKS in Hanau is researching the creation of a property portfolio for recycled Nd-Fe-B high-performance permanent magnets. In the project, mixed waste magnet flows are transferred into new high-performance magnets using efficient recycling technologies. These will be installed in demonstrators, tested and subjected to a complete sustainability and cost analysis. Possible fields of application, especially in the field of electromobility, will be identified and it will be shown that a substitution by these more sustainable magnets is possible without any loss of performance in the components.
The aim is to demonstrate that efficient recycling technologies are available and that recycled magnets can be used for various applications, ultimately increasing public acceptance of the use of recycled material in the field of electromobility. To this end, the magnets are to be removed from traction motors, an eScooter and motion sensors in FUNMAG and analyzed. Subsequently, recycling magnets with the same properties are to be produced and installed in the components.
