CIRCONOMY Hub Circular Carbon Technologies

Shaping the Circular Economy of Tomorrow Together

The transformation from a linear to a circular economy is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Fraunhofer IWKS is leading the way: As part of the Fraunhofer CIRCONOMY® Hub, we develop marketable solutions to keep raw materials in the loop and defossilize the industry.

Our Focus: The “Circular Carbon Technologies” (CCT) Hub

In Bavaria, Fraunhofer IWKS, together with the Fraunhofer UMSICHT and Fraunhofer IGB institutes, is focusing on the CIRCONOMY® Hub for Circular Carbon Technologies (CCT).

Carbon is a central element of our economy. To mitigate climate change, we must end our dependence on fossil sources. In the CCT Hub, we are developing technologies to:

  • tap into non-fossil carbon sources.
  • keep carbon in products within the cycle or permanently sequester it.
  • achieve significant COsavings in the chemical, energy, and mobility sectors.

The Role of Fraunhofer IWKS: From the Lab to Industry

Fraunhofer IWKS contributes its expertise in materials and resource strategy to transform theoretical concepts into industrial applications.

Our core tasks in the project:

1. Pilot Testing & Demonstration: We set up and operate pilot plants in local application centers. Here, we test new technologies under real-world conditions directly with industry partners.

2. Material Recycling for Industry: We demonstrate how regional circular economies function. A current focus is the extraction of basic chemicals from the shredder lightweight fraction (SLF) of end-of-life vehicle recycling to produce new high-quality plastics for the Bavarian automotive industry.

3. Knowledge Transfer & Networking: We integrate new technologies into regional value chains and foster ongoing dialogue between research and industry.
