Prof. Heuberger is Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits. Since 2011, he is holding the Chair of Information Technologies with focus on Communication Electronics at the University Erlangen-Nürnberg. His research interests are communication technologies for Internet of Things and 5G communications. He oversees numerous R&D activities in the area of cognitive sensor technologies for mobility, industrial control and health applications.

Albert Heuberger received his Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering from Erlangen University before joining Fraunhofer IIS as research associate in the area Radio Communication in 1987. He became head of the Communications department as well as the research focus on localization and communication. Receiving his doctorate degree in 2005 he was appointed university professor in 2008 at the Ilmenau University of Technology for the research area Wireless Distribution Systems / Digital Broadcasting, for which he founded a project group.
In 2011, Albert Heuberger was promoted to the Executive Director of Fraunhofer IIS, which ranks first among the Fraunhofer Institutes concerning headcount and revenues (1100 employees and 170M€ budget). As the main inventor of mp3 and universally credited with the co-development of AAC audio coding standard, Fraunhofer IIS has reached worldwide recognition. The institute provides research services on contract basis and technology licensing in the fields of electronics, communication and media technology.

Albert Heuberger is member of several organizations in the field of broadcasting and communication (WorldDAB, DRM, DVB). He is Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting. In 2017, Albert Heuberger was appointed to the National Academy of Science and Engineering of Germany.

Since January 2020, Prof. Albert Heuberger has been the new spokesman of the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics’ board of directors as well as the chairman of the steering committee of the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD).

Green ICT - saving energy and resources in information and communication technology

Microelectronic devices are becoming smaller and smaller and are now also built to be very power-efficient. But on the other hand, the demands on computer performance are increasing as functions become more complex and the total energy consumption of information and communication technology is rising continuously. Therefore, Green ICT should stop or reverse the trend of increasing energy consumption and it should help to reduce the resource consumption during the lifetime of ICT systems. In this talk, Prof. Dr. Albert Heuberger will give a short overview of how resource and energy consumption in ICT systems can be reduced.
