E-MRS Fall Meeting and Exhibit 2022

Fraunhofer IWKS participated successfully in the E-MRS Fall Meeting 2022.

From 19. to 21. September, the Technical University of Warsaw hosted the E-MRS Fall Meeting 2022. 16 symposia and an exhibition of relevant products and services offered room for exciting discussions about the latest developments and insights from material sciences.

Fraunhofer IWKS hosted the symposium CIRCULAR MATERIALS AND RESOURCE CHEMISTRY, which took place 19 and 20 of September, 2022 and introduced the first time the topic of circular materials and resource chemistry at the E-MRS conference. 34 participants registered for the symposium and contributed with invited and contributed talks to six topical sessions: (Bio)Polymers - Synthesis and Degradability, Energy Materials for Circular Economy, Resource Strategies for a Circular Transition, Materials Synthesis, Processing and Recovery I & II and Sustainability of Battery Systems.

After two days of intense scientific exchange and discussions, key lessons learned were:

•       A circular economy needs (circular) material solutions.

•       Sustainability aspects should be treated as properties of materials.

•       A change of mindset and of academic curricula are needed.

Matthew Wei Ming Tan from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, received the Graduate Student Award for his work on “Designing Soft Electronics for a Circular Economy”. Also, Martine Jacob from Universität Stuttgart, Germany, won the poster prize for her work entitled “Recycling for all-solid-state lithium batteries with halide-based-solid electrolyte Li3InCl6”. The organizers of Symposium O congratulate both for their excellent contributions.

The symposium organizers would like to highlight that the overall topic of the symposium was received very well at the conference: Numerous conference participants from other symposia also joined the presentations and enriched the discussions with their valuable contributions. In particular, Symposium O was also perceived as a good prelude to the “Workshop on Material Recycling and Circular Economy” that took place September 21, 2022.
