Fraunhofer IWKS is actively involved in several networks on international level. The aim is to combine competences from industry, research and politics and strengthen exchange among their stakeholders.

KIC EIT Raw Materials

The EIT Raw Materials, founded in 2014 by the European Commission, is the largest consortium in the raw materials sector worldwide. Its vision is to turn raw materials into a strategic strength for the European Union by:

  • Fast-tracking start-ups and the commercialization of ideas
  • Encouraging exchange and networking across different disciplines
  • Creating new entrepreneurial education approaches

Fraunhofer IWKS is an active member of the consortium, which currently unites over 100 partners from more than 20 EU countries.

The EIT Raw Materials promotes collaboration among education institutions, research institutes and key players from the industry. The sharing of knowledge, information, and skills is crucial to find new solutions to improve the raw materials sector all along the value chain, from exploration to extraction processes all the way to product design, recycling and reuse.


European Enhanced Landfill Mining Consortium (EURELCO)

Enhanced landfill mining is defined as “the integrated valorization of landfilled waste streams as materials and energy (carries), using innovative transformation and upcycling technologies and respecting the most stringent social and ecological criteria”.

To initiate landfill mining in the EU, a paradigm shift is required in which landfills are to be considered resource reservoirs awaiting their valorization. The European Enhanced Landfill Mining Consortium (EURELCO) is an open network that supports the required technological, legal, social, economic, environmental and organisational innovation with respect to Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM).

As one of the current 57 partners, the Fraunhofer IWKS works to achieve the ongoing goals of the consortium. Our main tasks include performing cutting-edge research in ELFM technologies, assisting demonstration cooperative projects and endorsing different dissemination activities that target the widest and most diverse audience possible.
