Substitution of strategic elements and materials

Prof. Dr. Oliver Gutfleisch, Sci Manager, Prof. for Functional Materials, TU Darmstadt, Department of Materials Science

The division Functional Materials is primarily concerned with the best possible equivalent replacement of rare and expensive raw materials in various products, applications and technologies. The goal is the development of innovative materials and also the substitution of very rare and expensive raw materials and materials at the component, process and technology level.

One focus of the work is on the development of permanent magnets with drastically reduced rare earth content with constant or improved operating properties, eg for use in electric motors and wind turbines.

The focus is also on the optimization and development of:

  • Critical functional materials
  • Optical materials
  • Optoelectronic components
  • lighting systems
    cooling systems
